THANKSGIVING BEER PAIRINGS: COOKING WITH RAY

Did you know beer has a spectacular ability to pair with a variety of food? While Winemakers have one ingredient to work with (grapes), Beermakers can play with a handful of ingredients. Beer has four basic ingredients: grain, yeast, hops, and water. However by experimenting with these ingredients or by adding additional elements they can effect the final outcome of a beer.

Grains can add a variety of characteristics to a beer’s flavor profile depending on the types of grains selected. For example, barely can add sweetness, darker malts can add notes of biscuit, while rye can add hints of spice.

Yeast can release flavorful esters and phenols into a beer by providing spicy fruity flavors or notes of banana.

Hops help add bitterness and can also introduce tropical, citrus, earthy, and herbal flavors and aromas.

Here at Four Day Ray we make beer pairing easy. That’s why we have created a handy list of our current seasonal favorites that will pair perfectly at your Thanksgiving table, Friendsgiving celebration, or with those tasty leftovers on Black Friday.

1. Lantern Light Lager (psst…perfect to drink while cooking)

This lager is extremely balanced with a crisp finish that has a slightly lingering bitterness. A style that was originally brewed for the working man, this lager is light enough to quench your thirst but satisfying enough to reward you for your hard day’s work. We named this lager as a tribute to coal miners for whom this beer style originated in the city of Dortmund Germany.

Pair with your favorite appetizers and first courses to pleasantly echo the flavors found in this Lager. Make sure to have enough “left over” to enjoy with leftovers! We find it best paired with turkey, oyster dressing, and mild cheeses.

ABV 5.5 | IBU 28

2. Fala Scotch Ale

Fala pairs wonderfully with rich dishes. It has a caramel aroma with a slight cherry smokiness. The flavor profile tastes of sweet caramel malt with a touch of smoke and a slight cherry finish. To give this beer its smokiness we have added a small amount of peated malt. Part of the wort was pulled off for additional caramelization during an extended boil. It’s hopped with German and English Hops. It stands up nicely next to your perfectly seasoned turkey with stuffing, buttery mashed potatoes, and obligatory green beans. Let this smoky, caramel scotch ale shine along-side your hearty main course through the end of your meal.

ABV 7.8 | IBU 22

3. Snow Shed Winter Ale

Dark copper in color with a tan head and aromas of nutmeg and cinnamon as well as malty sweetness with hints of fruit, nuts, and bread. This is a great beer to pair with fruit pies, turkey or ham. This beautiful spiced ale is so versatile it can withstand your final, final course and will enhance the transition to dessert.

ABV 6.5 | IBU 31

4. Peanut Butter Porter

With notes of roasty peanut butter, chocolate, and toffee flavors, the smooth chocolate finish of our Peanut Butter Porter is the perfect option for those who prefer to drink their dessert. Make a Peanut Butter Porter Float or pair it with chocolate cake -- and that is how you nail the Thanksgiving feast finale.

ABV 5.0 | IBU 26

Crowlers & growlers of these beers are available in our tasting room and family friendly restaurant. Enjoy a pint with us, then bring home some beer to share at your table with friends and family this holiday season. You’ll find your meal never tasted so good.
